How to choose your first saddle box
Your first saddle box is usually something you buy for years. That is why the decision should not be based only on how much equipment you own today. How you use your gear, the space you have available, whether you travel to competitions and how your needs may change over time are just as important. This is exactly why Cavlux offers different models – not every rider needs the same saddle box. A good saddle box does not have to be the biggest one. It should suit you, your equipment and the way you actually use it.
Start with your equipment – but think ahead
One saddle or two? What type of saddles? How much space do you need for bridles, your helmet, saddle pads, boots and other equipment? Your own gear should be the starting point when choosing the right size. It also makes sense to leave some room for future needs, as your equipment may change over time. That does not mean that the biggest model is automatically the best choice. More storage space also means larger external dimensions. Especially if your saddle box regularly travels with you, it is worth finding the right balance between capacity and convenient everyday use.
Pony Rider, Junior Rider or Superior Rider?
Cavlux models are designed for different needs. Rather than comparing dimensions alone, consider what equipment you want to store and how you intend to use your saddle box.
Pony Rider
Pony Rider is the smallest model in the Cavlux collection, designed with younger riders and their equipment in mind. Its compact dimensions make it easier to find space for it in the tack room, while the interior provides an organised place for a young rider’s gear. Having their own saddle box also gives young riders their own space for equipment – everything has its place and stays within easy reach.
Junior Rider
Junior Rider offers more storage space while remaining relatively compact. The model is equipped with two saddle racks, but their number is not the only factor to consider. The type and size of the saddles matter as well. Two large dressage saddles require different space than two jumping saddles. The saddle box should therefore be chosen around the equipment you actually own, rather than simply by the number of saddle racks.
Superior Rider
Superior Rider is currently the largest standard Cavlux model. It provides more room for equipment and greater flexibility when organising the interior. If even Superior Rider does not offer enough space, the Cavlux collection is continuing to grow – we are currently working on Alto Rider, which will be the largest saddle box in our collection.
Size is about more than storage capacity
A saddle box also needs to fit the space in which it will be used. Doorways and passages matter, as does the room needed to open the box. If you travel with it, the available space in your horsebox or trailer becomes equally important. If the saddle box is moved frequently, its weight and wheels should also be considered. The stated weight refers to an empty box – once saddles and other equipment are inside, the overall weight will naturally increase. Cavlux saddle boxes come with 120 mm wheels as standard, while larger 160 mm wheels are available in selected configurations. Capacity, external dimensions and mobility should therefore be considered together.
Why does Cavlux use flight case technology?
Cavlux did not begin as a conventional piece of stable furniture. The construction of our saddle boxes is rooted in our experience with professional flight cases. For more than 20 years, GO!PACK has been designing and manufacturing transport cases, including solutions for heavy and delicate equipment. We used this know-how when developing Cavlux saddle boxes. Different equipment and a different environment – but the same expertise in design and manufacturing. We adapted the technology we know from years of practical experience to equestrian equipment and the way a saddle box is used every day.
Look inside before you choose
External dimensions alone do not tell you whether a saddle box will really suit your needs. The way the interior is organised matters just as much – saddle racks, space for bridles, shelves and other storage features all affect everyday use. Cavlux saddle boxes also include practical details as standard, such as a shatter-resistant mirror and a replaceable magnetic nameplate. It is therefore worth comparing the full specifications of each model rather than looking at size alone.
What if a standard model does not fit?
Sometimes particular requirements come from the equipment itself or from the space available in a tack room, horsebox or trailer. In that case, you do not necessarily have to adapt your needs to an off-the-shelf solution. We can design your Cavlux saddle box together, taking into account the available space, the equipment you want to store and the way you intend to use it – within the possibilities of the construction. If one of our standard models already meets your needs, however, a custom modification is simply unnecessary.
So how do you choose your first Cavlux saddle box?
Do not simply look for the biggest model. Start with your own equipment, consider the space available and think about how you will use your saddle box. Then compare the size, interior organisation and equipment of the different models. Once you know which saddle box fits your needs, you can move on to the most enjoyable part – choosing the colour, finish and other personalisation options. Your first saddle box does not have to be the biggest.
It should be yours.
